Project description
The re-use of treated wastewater from wetlands to irrigate cash crop production from rural areas may help to alleviate poverty and ensure household food-security. The aim of the project is to obtain a scientific base for policy preparation and development on the sustainable re-use of water from wineries for cash crop production by farm labourers. If positive results are obtained, farm labourers will be involved in the project during a second phase.

The long-term objectives To determine the impact of treated winery effluents on various chemical and physical properties of soils where treated effluent is used to irrigate cash crops To determine the performance of various cash crops under irrigation with treated winery wastewater To determine the impact of wastewater on the nutritional status of the crops
