Project description
Genomic and cDNA libraries can be viewed as genetic references for the specific grape cultivar being used as source material. Many biotechnological projects rely on the presence of representative libraries and whereas a genomic library is representative of the total genomic composition of a specific cultivar, a cDNA library represents only genes that are expressed in the tissues that were used as source material. The latter is useful when the purpose is to isolate genes that are only differentially expressed. Both a cDNA and a genomic library have been constructed from Pinotage in this project and are currently screened for useful genes and promoters.
Genomic and cDNA libraries are resources in plant biotechnology to isolate genes and promoters from and to analyse fundamental aspects of genome organisation of a plant species. The objectives of this study was to construct a genomic DNA library from Pinotage as well as to construct a cDNA library from leaves of Pinotage.
