Project description
Improper spray techniques result in poor spray coverage and insufficient control of foliar and fruit diseases of grapevine. Given favourable environmental conditions and insufficient management strategies, diseases such as grapevine downy mildew, powdery mildew and grey mould can cause severe crop losses. Practical management of these diseases relies almost exclusively on well-timed and/or routine fungicide applications and producers invest heavily in chemical products and spray equipment. However, research regarding spray application to ensure efficient spray coverage is desperately needed to ensure more effective disease management.

The ultimate aim of this project is the development of guidelines and protocols that would optimise the application of fungicide sprays at various phenological stages and on different trellising systems in order to facilitate the deposition of at least the minimum required residue for effective pathogen control on the susceptible vegetative and reproductive parts of the grapevine.
