Project description
Phaeomoniella chlamydospora and species of Phaeoacremonium are commonly associated with black goo disease of vines. However, there are still numerous species of Phaeoacremonium and other Acremonium- and Phaeoacremonium-like species that are consistently isolated from vines with black goo symptoms. This is also the case in other countries suffering from black goo of vines. Nothing is known about the role these fungi play in black goo, their epidemiology, importance, how infection occurs, the fungi are dispersed, or how the disease can be controlled.

The following aspects will be addressed:
1. Several other, as yet unnamed Phaeoacremonium-like species also occur in vines. Which of these are the real pathogens? The pathology has never been done. The synergism between these pathogens in the disease complex also needs to be resolved.
2. Molecular kits need to be developed to facilitate early detection of those species identified as pathogens in this complex. These kits can then be used to screen apparently healthy material.
3. How does Phaeomoniella infect vines? How does it spread within older vine material?
4. What types of stress enhance disease development, and how can we avoid it? How do the different pathogens in the goo complex react to stress? What stress levels are acceptable?
