Evaluation of the effect of insecticides and fungicides on natural enemies of mealybug

Project Number:
WW 05-12

Project title
Evaluation of the effect of insecticides and fungicides on natural enemies of mealybug

Project leader
Walton, V M

Institution
University of Stellenbosch

Project description
The data extracted from the bioassays indicated that: For N. ‘boschianus’ all the insecticides tested were toxic. The stem barrier treatment alpha cypermentrin was also found to be toxic to N. ‘boschianus’. Work done in the field, however, proved that this chemical can in fact assist biological control by limiting ant populations to the soil area, preventing their interference with biological control. Formethanate (used on thrips) was slightly harmful and should (if sprayed early) not have any effect on biological control. Sulphur/polysulphide sulphur was not toxic to N. ‘boschianus’. This chemical can, however, not be sprayed during the season because of its phytotoxicity to plant parts at this time. These results need to be confirmed by field work.
