Project description
Production of healthy, pathogen-free grapevines is of cardinal importance to the grapevine industry. Knowledge obtained from previous studies (WW 06-15, WW 06-20) gave significant insight into the presence of grapevine trunk disease causing pathogens in propagation material. Critical stages in the propagation process could therefore be identified. Consequent research efforts (WW 06-21, WW 06-26, WW 06-27) have focused on these critical stages in order to prevent, reduce or eradicate contamination and infection of propagation material and nursery grapevines. The objective of the current project is to integrate all the known information, as well as some new ideas, into a comprehensive and environmentally safe protocol for the pro-active management of grapevine trunk diseases in nurseries. Nursery trials will therefore be conducted whereby different protocols are compared with each other. Various chemical, biological and physical treatments will be investigated, divided in three categories according to their environmentally-safe status.
The aim of this project is therefore to formulate and evaluate an integrated strategy for the pro-active management of grapevine trunk diseases in nurseries. Various strategies [chemical, biological and physical (hot water) treatments] will be investigated with a special emphasis on environmentally safe alternatives.
