Project title
Ecophysiological characterisation of viticultural terroirs: Stellenbosch

Project leader
Carey, V A

Institution
University of Stellenbosch

Project description
In order to maintain a competitive edge in the international wine market it is vital to produce unique wines of high quality. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to determine viticultural terroirs and understand their functioning re Vitis vinifera in order to ensure optimum cultivar placement and choice of technology. In order to finally determine viticultural terroirs it is necessary to monitor the terroir, vine and wine interaction.

This project aims to finalise the natural terroir unit identification and to establish a reference network of pertinent cultivars on dominant natural terroir units within the Stellenbosch wine producing area for further ecophysiological studies.
