Project title
Determining the pollution extent of organic components of winery effluent on irrigated sites

Project leader
Mulidzi, A R

Project description
Wastewater is the most important aspect in wine cellars that can result in detrimental effects on natural environment. National legislation and foreign markets require responsible management of potentially negative environmental impacts. In South Africa more than 90% of wine cellars dispose of their effluent by means of land application. The majority of cellars currently dispose of effluent by irrigation as the primary treatment option. Research has indicated that the organic components of winery effluent can pose severe pollution problems to the soil to which it is applied. The overall aim of the project is to obtain information on the incidence of pollution on sites previously and currently irrigated with winery wastewater.
