Project title: The effect of row direction on the physiological, viticultural and enological performance of Shiraz/101-14 Mgt
Project leader: Hunter, J J
Project description:
The effect of row orientation of vertically trellised and shoot-positioned Shiraz/101-14 Mgt on vineyard meso- and microclimate, vine physiological status and berry temperature profiles within the context of regional macroclimate was investigated under field conditions over many seasons. The study included four-row orientations: NS, EW, NE-SW and NW-SE. Novel information was obtained. This comprehensive study showed for the first time much-needed scientific evidence of the value that row orientation as vineyard practice may have in the valorisation of terroir potential. The study provided new insights into the role of row orientation as a viticulture practice and the management of existing vineyards, irrespective of terroir and product objectives. Results showed significant trends that can globally (and within the context of climate change) be used as guidelines, even when multiple row orientations (straight or curved) per vineyard are used and when vineyards are established in more complex terroirs.
